Pennine joins the Nycomm Group

Communications supply specialist The Nycomm Group has announced a major new acquisition by snapping up fellow communications-related business Pennine Group in a multi-million-pound deal.

Manchester-based Nycomm now comprises four main brands of Nimans (comms distribution), Rocom (specific corporate end user sales), Videonations (audio visual and video conferencing specialist) as well as Pennine. The £100m turnover Group is spearheaded by Chairman and Managing Director, Julian Niman – and is gearing up to hit the £150m revenue mark.

Julian created Nimans in the 1980’s and enjoys a close working relationship and friendship with Pennine’s Managing Director Andy Roberts; both sharing a passion for two-way radios, a key strand of Pennine’s 40-year business success. In addition to an unparalleled portfolio of products, Nycomm will also benefit from the addition of Andy, to its board.

The Pennine Group recently unveiled a new name, brand identity and website to mark its milestone anniversary. The Bury-based business, formerly Pennine Telecom, is now simply known as Pennine to reflect the company’s much broader portfolio of specialist products and services. These span its original specialism, two-way radio, along with unified communications, mobile telephony and newly launched hosted voice and data facilities plus IT support.

The Nycomm Group employs almost 300 staff from offices in Manchester, Leeds, Altrincham, London and now Bury. Employing some 75 staff, Pennine was founded as a two-way radio specialist in Heywood, Lancs, in 1976. It was appointed the UK’s first Motorola service dealer and swiftly hit the road to success with Greater Manchester Buses as its first client. Later the company supported both Manchester United FC and City by providing radios to the clubs’ security teams. Having since diversified, the company has built an impressive client base which includes BAe Systems, Sellafield and the Lowry Centre – spanning a broad range of sectors such as the nuclear and manufacturing industries, further and higher education sectors and professional services.

The Pennine Group is a £14m turnover operation which is a distributor of the analogue and IP handset businesses Interquartz UK and Yealink UK – and is set for further growth under the Nycomm umbrella. The company has been acquired for an undisclosed sum.

Chairman of Nycomm, Julian Niman, remarked: “Pennine share our vision and passion in offering the highest levels of service to their customers across the SME sector, blue-chip organisations and public sector. Together we can continue our journey of growth, offering our customers a stronger and wider selection of products and solutions.”

Julian pointed out how a great example of Pennine’s expertise is the recently awarded BAe Systems Submarine contract, a world first in the two-way radio market with the first deployment of the Motorola Mototrbo Capacity Max system, the very latest, most secure and resilient two-way radio solution.

“Andy and his team bring with them decades of experience in the sales of these products and will ensure a seamless integration that brings new growth for the Group in addition to the existing revenue from Pennine.”

He added: “Pennine will bring a host of high calibre long term contracts built up over its illustrious history and will also provide the Group with direct access to the Yealink and Interquartz product ranges.  This will help the Group grow its purchasing power and further extend its geographic reach. The divisions within the Pennine Group complement our existing direct supply offerings from Rocom and will provide new supply opportunities for Nimans and Videonations

“Pennine is a successful and growing business which increases our specialist capabilities in two-way radio and gives the Group an unparalleled product portfolio in radio, telecoms, UC, hosted, IT services, hire, video, consumer and peripheral products which will help build growth towards our next target of £150 million.

“Pennine’s team of experts provide the perfect opportunity to maximise talent and share knowledge as well as building experience and skill sets within the Group.”

Financial advice to Nycomm was provided by Kay Johnson Gee, as Roger Blaskey commented: “We were delighted to once again help Nycomm in the further development of their very successful business.”
